When I was growing up, my dad worked at a factory. He wore a hard hat and carried a packed lunch. And even though he went to work—on schedule every shift—I constantly worried that he would be replaced by a robot.
My fears had some basis in reality. At the time, it felt like robots were taking over the world—from KITT, a talking and self-driving car, to Robocop, a cyborg police officer. And way back in 1980, an article in The New York Times warned, “A Robot Is After Your Job.”
