Employers can offer online or in-person jobs in Grow Detroit’s Young Talent’s 2nd COVID-altered year – Crain’s Detroit Business

Summer jobs program Grow Detroit’s Young Talent is gearing up for its seventh year running and its second during the coronavirus pandemic.

Applications go live Thursday for around 8,000 six-week summer positions set aside for Detroiters ages 14-24. Companies that have signed up to offer these positions include DTE Energy Co., Carhartt Inc. and Bank of America.

Large and small employers can sign up to host a student or a group of them, paying $1,800 per youth — or $900 if that’s not financially feasible.

Employees are then paid through the program. Wages range from $8.25 per hour to $10 depending on age and level of participation, while some youth get an up to $1,000 stipend. Last year 8,006 youth participated — more than 6,000 virtually. Generally 20 to 25 private employers take part annually.

Like last summer, the city of Detroit-led initiative will be mostly online, with participants logging on to do remote work, work-readiness training and using other online educational programming. Participants can use a smartphone, tablet or laptop. Some employers will still offer in-person, socially distanced jobs.

Grow Detroit’s Young Talent has also started testing a year-round program that goes beyond the summer, as well as mentorship opportunities. It also this year launched an app through which youth can communicate with the program and learn some financial literacy tips.

Employers can find out more about how to participate at GDYT.org.
